About the Society

The Anstruther Philharmonic Society (formed in 1892) is a choral society, based in the East Neuk of Fife, rehearsing and performing in and around Anstruther.   We have a friendly and welcoming approach to everything we do and strive for high standards of performance.  We are known locally as ‘the Phil’.

What we do (adapted from the Society's Constitution):
  • Study and practice choral music
  • Give two concerts each year, one in December and one in March, featuring professional soloists and orchestra
  • Foster public appreciation and knowledge of choral music

The Phil has performed a great variety of works, including:
  • Bach's Magnificat
  • Brahms 'Leibesleider Waltzes'
  • Handel's Messiah
  • Handel's 'Ode for St Cecilla's day'
  • Hummel's Masses
  • Purcell's Come Ye Sons of Art
  • Purcell's 'Dido and Aenaes'
  • Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols
  • and many others

The Society is governed by a Committee in accordance with its Constitution.  The Committee is responsible for the week to week running of the Society, its concerts, events and fundraising activities.
